Wheat Weißbier Signature Spiral Glass - Set of 2 Glasses
Category: leffe beer glass
The Paulaner brewery, located in Munich, has a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. Established by the Minim friars of the Neudeck ob der Au cloister, this brewery owes its name to Saint Francis of Paola, the founder of the mendicant order. The association with Saint Francis is significant, as the friars who lived on Neuhauser Straße in Munich belonged to this order.
Since as early as 1634, the monks brewed beer primarily for their own consumption. The only type of beer they were allowed to sell during holidays was a Bock style, which quickly gained popularity among locals. However, the Neudeck Cloister was abolished in 1799, which led to the transformation of the building into a penitentiary. Franz Xaver Zacherl, a dedicated brewer, acquired the former cloister's brewing facility and continued to uphold the tradition of crafting strong beers, known as "Starkbier." His signature creation, Salvator — meaning "Savior" in Latin — became renowned.
In 1861, Zacherl opened the "Salvatorkeller" or Salvator cellar on Nockherberg, further expanding the brewery's legacy. A significant development occurred in 1928 when Paulaner merged with Gebrüder Thomas brewery, resulting in the formation of Paulaner Salvator Thomas Bräu.
One of the brewery's notable products is the Weißbier, or white beer, often served in a distinctive Schooner glass. This glass measures 8 inches tall, with a width of 2.25 inches at the base and 2.5 inches at the top rim, boasting a capacity of 0.5 liters. It showcases an image on one side, prominently featuring the traditional Paulaner logo. Manufactured in Germany, these glasses are made by Sahm Fine Glassware, ensuring high quality.
To maintain the exquisite condition of these glasses, it is recommended that they be hand washed only. The gold or silver rims and logos are particularly delicate and will not withstand the harsh conditions of a dishwasher. This care will help preserve the unique design and functionality of the glasses, which come in a premium set of two, each holding 0.5 liters (16.9 oz.) of beer.
The Paulaner brewery's commitment to quality and tradition is reflected not only in its brewing practices but also in its choice of glassware. Each sip from the specially made Weissbier glass not only enhances the drinking experience but also pays homage to the rich history of brewing in Munich. Enjoying a cold Paulaner Weißbier from such a beautifully crafted glass is not just about savoring a beverage; it’s about connecting with centuries of craftsmanship and communal celebration that began with the Minim friars nearly 400 years ago.
